Illustrator Highlight

ペイト シホ

Shiho Pate’s playful art is inspired by her childhood memories, her Japanese culture, her immigrant life in America and her 10-year-old daughter.  With a warm, colorful style that brings together the joyful exuberance of her multiple art techniques—sumi ink, watercolor, digital media, and more—Shiho creates inventive, energetic scenes and characters that are both endearing and enduring.

From Shiho’s authorial debut PLOCK! (WIP)

Shiho (Shee-Ho) burst on the scene as an artist for several indie gaming studios in NYC. Her sense of fun and intuitive understanding of children drew her into the world of social and mobile gaming for more than a decade. Now, Shiho’s passion—as exemplified by her rich, distinctive, action-packed art—is geared towards creating books for children. Lucky us!

Pate’s spirited, manga-esque illustrations feature diagonal panels and dynamic text (accompanied by near-flawless Japanese translations) rendered in a vibrant palette of eye-catching yellows, blues, greens, and oranges.

With a portfolio of almost a dozen books (available and upcoming)—and in categories from picture book to comic and from non-fiction to early readers—Shiho’s humorous, heart-based illustrations show emotion and capture playful action equally well.

Shiho was the perfect choice to illustrate these stories—her funny, poignant and heartbreakingly sweet drawings make you fall in love with these characters.

A graduate with honors from the Savannah College of Art and Design, Shiho is a winner in the International Award Citta di Chioggia. During her spare time, she enjoys gardening and practicing Japanese with her daughter, playing video games with her husband, and learning how to cook American food.  (Her apple pie is everyone’s favorite!) Shiho lives in Orange County, CA.
