GERMÁN BLANCO
ILLUSTRATOR HIGHLIGHT

From Monster Emotions
by Karen Kilpatrick (Genius Cat Books)

Germán Blanco would never have thought that his childhood love for doodling would eventually turn into a career, but it did. Now, with over 15 published books, Germán’s fun and quirky style, inspired by years of watching cartoons and reading comic strips, still reflects some of that childhood doodling.

by Karen Kilpatrick (Genius Cat Books)

Germán is the illustrator of the imaginative and engaging WHEN PENCIL MET ERASER (by Karen Kilpatrick and Luis O. Ramos, Jr., Macmillan/Henry Holt)—his picture book debut—and the launch title of a three-book series. A 2020 ILA-CBC Children’s Choice Selection available in four foreign language editions, WHEN PENCIL MET ERASER was named one of the Best Children’s Books of 2019 by Parents’ Magazine.

Germán is also the illustrator of P.I. BUTTERFLY, an early graphic novel series (by Karen Kilpatrick/Genius Cat), the first installment of which—GONE GUPPY—is the winner of the 2022 Foreword Reviews Book of the Year award.

Germán was born in Venezuela and moved to the United States when he was 17. He majored in advertising in college, but after graduation, followed his artistic passions into graphic design—first for Del Monte and then global toy company Jazwares—where he worked his way up to become Creative Director of the idea incubation division before leading the Creative Services team for the marketing department.

From Moose on the Loose
by Grammy Award Winner Ozomatli (Genius Cat Books)

A self-taught illustrator and graphic designer, Germán hopes to inspire those who didn’t follow a more traditional path in life to show that it’s never too late to follow your dreams. When not working, he enjoys drawing bad jokes, watching movies, and playing sports. He doodles away from his home in South Florida.
