KERSTIN STOCK
ILLUSTRATOR HIGHLIGHT

When she was in kindergarten, Kerstin Stock was asked to draw a self-portrait. The result? A full-body self-portrait that featured little else than a large bow in her hair. Yes. She was destined to be an artist. Today, Kerstin uses color to perfectly set the mood of her illustrations. She uses a heightened sense of color palette to create illustrations bursting with happiness—like Kerstin herself—but she is just as good at choosing the perfect colors to convey sadness or sorrow or melancholy.

From a work-in-progress.

Working mainly traditionally, Kerstin usually starts creating on paper, with watercolors. She then adds distinct shapes and patterns created with color pencils and gel pens, infusing her work with interesting lines to illustrate animals, nature, and community. And she uses negative space to perfectly balance her compositions. Photoshop and Procreate play a role toward the end of the process, for final corrections and touch ups.

From a work-in-progress.

Kerstin has taught art at many levels, from mommy-and-me toddler to adult community classes. She has licensed her work and shown it in galleries, Art Walks, and Holiday Markets. She has worked on commissions, most recently three watercolor pieces for the lobby of Colorado Mountain College. She is also a licensed massage therapist. But with a BFA in Film/Animation from the Rhode Island School of Art, Kerstin’s heart is in storytelling. She is inspired by nature and culture and history, and she can never have enough bikes or dogs—whether in real life or in her illustrations.

The daughter of a commercial pilot and a flight attendant, Kerstin was born with a travel bug. She’s visited five continents and is often out in her vintage camper for trips under the trees. She enjoys being a mom, volunteering in her community, and advocating for affordable housing and healthcare. She lives in Salida, Colorado.
