“Ron Barrett is an inspired clown”— Christopher Lehmann-Haupt, Editor, The NYT Book Review
Ron is also the illustrator of the classic picture book, CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS, a NYT Best Illustrated Book. It has sold over six million copies globally and produced two motion pictures, a TV series, and even resulted in Happy Meal toys. In all, Ron has illustrated and authored over 30 books for children and adults. Another selected highlight: a sequel to ANIMALS SHOULD DEFINITELY NOT WEAR CLOTHING, in print for 45 years, was published last year. And stay tuned for LOOK WHAT I SEE (in addition to other titles) this year!
From LOOK WHAT I SEE, by Judi Barrett (Little Simon)
Throughout his career, Ron has used several forms of media — from pen and ink in CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS to watercolor in CATS GET FAMOUS and CATS GOT TALENT to coquille board and digital color in LOOK WHAT I SEE. He takes great pleasure in drawing with pencil on coquille board, a tonal medium used in the past by editorial cartoonists. The textured board allows him to create sculptural effects in greys, then overlay them with Photoshop color. This gives him both the freedom of rendering with pencil and the control of the digital medium, and helps him create a modern look with a classic feel.
BALD EAGLE, a never-before seen illustration from Ron’s new manuscript IF FISHES HAD WISHES
“…terrific pictures, with their crisp outlines, yellow-orange hues, dramatic lighting, and cross-hatching, hearken back to the comic book art of the 1950s…”— Publishers Weekly (about SUPERHERO JOE)
Ron’s illustrations have been exhibited twice at The Louvre’s Museé des Arts Décoratifs. In addition, his work has appeared frequently in the New York Times since 1991. He’s also been a consultant to the Children’s TV Workshop (Sesame Street) and Art Director of the National Lampoon. This past year, Ron debuted as an illustrator in the New Yorker.
