Evergreen appeal:
With its storytelling theme and timeless art, WHEN YOU LOVE A BOOK has the makings of a modern classic.

Illustrations © Heather Brockman Lee, throughout

A true love letter to the power of storytelling …

… featuring nods
– with fun to guess riddles –

to some of the most beloved children’s books of all time.

 Bookmark, book bingo,
and bookplate printables:

“Bright illustrations make use of collage, incorporating the pages of a book into trees, children’s clothing, and wallpaper. A spirited ode to the ways books affect us all.”

KidLit Connection: Getting to Know Illustrator Heather Brockman Lee

WHEN YOU LOVE A BOOK, written by Kaz Windness, is an extra special collaboration because you and Kaz are also critique partners.
We like to say it is a book about friends made by friends who make books. The book itself is a beautiful tribute to classic stories that shaped so many of our childhoods, and that many of us continue to pass down to our own children and grandchildren.

What were your favorite parts about illustrating the book?
My favorite part was collecting and using old library cards signed by children and collaged throughout the book. I found most of them on Etsy or Ebay, and just loved feeling that connection to generations of readers. I didn’t want to cut up the actual cards, so I scanned and printed them on a rice paper meant for printmaking.

A story that explores diversity and adoption in a fun way, raising awareness of how every child is entitled to a family based on love.

“An excellent piece of bibliotherapy for adopted children. The bright, colored-pencil illustrations of pudgy chicks and cats add exuberance to the simply and wryly told tale.”

Brynne Barnes

Illustrated by
Brianna McCarthy

(Denene Millner Books/S&S)

“It’s so pretty, this book; it has a sweetness and a calm and an energy and a whimsical fantasy … (it’s) like a slice of lush sweet.”
—Denene Millner; VP and Publisher, Denene Millner Books/S&S

An imaginative PB with enchanting verse and whimsical, Afrofuturistic imagery depicting an expectant mother journeying through the universe her baby is inhabiting before it enters the world…

Barnes’ rhyming text exudes a sense of joy and anticipation; expectant parents will readily relate. McCarthy’s … ethereal artwork makes it clear that we’re all made of star stuff. Mother and child romp against saturated, textured backgrounds, … the overall mood is loving, dreamy, and tenderA rapturous journey powered by love that’s sure to transport readers across galaxies and back.

“A heartfelt ode to awaiting a new arrival that contemplates both shared adventures and the moment when ‘you won’t just be a dream.'”

As an expectant mother anxiously awaits the birth of her child, she envisions the mystical place her baby inhabits, dreaming of a colorful world where they dance, explore, and play.

Celebrating the magic and wonder of childhood along with the bond – and dreams – shared between children and their parents, grandparents, and caregivers who love them.

How did you come up with the idea?
I was thinking of writing a book like this when I was pregnant with my son.  I used to close my eyes, put my hands over my belly, and tell him stories about all of the wonderful and fantastic things we will do and the places we will see. The fantastical idea of a journey through the solar system was birthed from there.

What is something you hope your readers will take away?
I hope they will take away the whimsy and the wonder of this big universe that we live in and know that they have a place in it that’s special and delightful and delicious.

Brynne Barnes may not have wings. But her pen does. Or at least, she likes to think so. Since she was a kid, writing (and reading) has always made her feel like she can fly.  And she likes to remind young readers and writers that they too can fly in her classroom presentations all over the country — and the world. WHEN I SEE YOU is her fourth book. She is also the author of the 2022 African American Literary Award winner, BLACK GIRL RISING, for Best Picture Book; BOOKS DO NOT HAVE WINGS, a 2016 ABC Best Books for Young Readers; and COLORS OF ME, a 2012 Gelett Burgess Award Winner for First Published Book, a 2012 Friends of American Writers Award Winner for Juvenile Literature, and an Award-Winning Finalist in the Hardcover Fiction Category of The USA “Best Books 2011” Awards, sponsored by USA Book News. She is an English Professor at Schoolcraft College and a proud Michigander.

With SEL and STEAM connections, LUPITA’S HURRICANE PALOMITAS offers a great conversation starter about hurricanes, storms, and ways in which we can navigate worries…

… by choosing kindness in the face of fear, even during the harshest of storms.

Lived experience:
Inspired by Alexandra’s very own experience during Hurricane Irma in 2017.

When I first saw Anastasiya’s cover illustration, I was blown away (no pun intended!) It’s sweet and gentle, and captures the tone of the story so well. I also love Lupita’s tenderness as she holds the baby palomitas in her hands contrasted against the impending storm.

Living in South Florida, I’m no stranger to tropical storms and hurricanes. I’ve weathered countless storms-–though none as impactful as Hurricane Andrew in 1992. In 2017, as my husband, son, and I prepared for the possibility of Hurricane Irma, my son discovered two baby mourning doves whose nest had been knocked off our palm tree. I didn’t know it at the time, but this moment would become inspiration for LUPITA’S HURRICANE PALOMITAS

Hudson Valley Author Bob McKinnon Releases New Book (hvmag.com)

“Bob McKinnon is a powerful author who writes and teaches about issues related to the American dream. In the same vein as his New York Times bestseller, Three Little Engines, which provided a modern retelling of The Little Engine That Could, McKinnon’s upcoming picture book, America’s Dreaming, tells a heartwarming story of new beginnings and inspirations from the past. Along with talented illustrator Thai My Phuong, McKinnon draws from his own experiences to paint this impactful story.”

Just in!

Image
A flower-loving child helps a grouchy neighbor blossom.

…[Erin Dealey‘s] bright, bouncy story offers some lovely messages: Kindness can soften the hardest hearts, and we miss out when we make snap judgments. Cosgrove’s colorful illustrations have a childlike exuberance, set against textured backdrops. Laudably, professionals such as a pediatrician and a school principal are depicted as female-presenting people of color. A vibrant reminder to look beyond appearances—a lesson that applies to flowers as well as to people.

“The most fascinating thing about Wilma Dykeman is that she was a woman ahead of her time.  To quote her son, Jim Stokely, ‘at the age of 35, she (Wilma), would write the first full-fledged economic arguments against water pollution ever published.’”
